For those of you who catch the King Crimson reference in the title, I call your attention to the line further on:"The fate of all mankind, I see, is in the hands of fools."
I no longer feel any personal enmity towards Mr. Contract, but I wonder how much he got paid for wasting so much time.

I've always been bothered by this type of thing in schools. My experience, in both middle school and high school, the better you did, the less you had to do.
I got really good grades in school and I found that after a couple weeks of hard work at the beginning of the school year, I got a reputation for being "smart" and the teachers actually laid off students like me. I had several classes where I didn't have to turn in any homework or take any quizzes, as long as I maintained good grades on tests.
So its ironic to me. I was allowed to sit around in class and do absolutely nothing, while I saw many of my friends and classmates get bogged down with tons of busywork...
Not me, I did horrible in school. I regret it now though. I just never could get the hang of everything. The worst thing for me though was the homework. Plus I think I got on to all of my teachers nerves being wise and what not. Now that I am in collage though I have a totally different out look. I think that some of the so called text book ways of teaching should be changed and maybe kids will actually want to learn and want to read. My mother in law is a school librarian and she tells me all the time how hard it is to get these kids to love reading. Personally I wish I had someone like her around when I was young to make reading fun for me then. Also spelling was never my thing, still isn't. Great post
Good heavens. I don't remember this at all! I think you had a more miserable elementary school experience than I had, though I thoroughly agree that in my public school experience, the textbook and even (usually) the teachers were fine, it was the dull assignments and the other kids that got in the way of my learning. Go homeschool!!!
